David Coote appointed VAR for Arsenal vs Liverpool again, despite penalty error in reverse fixture

David Coote

The PGMOL has appointed referee David Coote as VAR official again, despite the controversy generated following a costly penalty error in the reverse fixture between Arsenal and Liverpool.

Arsenal will host Liverpool in a crucial Premier League game for the Reds on Sunday, and the naming of Coote as VAR again has sparked angry fan reactions.

What happened?

David Coote was assigned to VAR in the first game between both Premier League sides back in December 2023, but failed to award a penalty for a clear handball by Martin Odegaard during the match.

Following that controversial decision, the PGMOL later confirmed that an error was made by Coote and it was indeed a handball, with Howard Webb also admitting that Coote did not apply the laws correctly.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has named David Coote as the referee to oversee VAR once again on Sunday, despite the error he made in the reverse Premier League fixture last year between Arsenal and Liverpool.

And fans are going crazy over the announcement, for obvious reasons.

Also, there are a lot of question marks over the appointment in this particular game, one of which is: If Coote made a costly error in that game which the PGMOL later admitted, why is he being named again in the same VAR position?
